

Macedonia AME Church
Our History
There are no records to show the exact date of the founding of Macedonia AME Church, Kaufman, Texas. From verbal Information passed down through the years, some believe that from 1905 to 1909, Macedonia AME Church was located on Hickory Street. There are no records stating what happened during this time frame.
However, the present location is 1504 East First North Street. It is believed that a small group of members had a vision and a mission to provide a better place for worship services; therefore, with a strong vision and a dedicated mission they purchased the present location on April 05, 1909, Macedonia AMEC 1504 East First North Street, Kaufman, Texas. The pastor at that time was Rev. C.C. Collins, and the trustees included: T.J. Norwood, H. Bechara, and Gabe Jones.
The first Corner Stone was laid, June 4, 1916. This Cornerstone was presented to Macedonia by the knights and Daughters of Tabor Lodges of Kaufman. The pastor at that time was Rev. H D. Holloway. Rev. Holloway’s administration: T.J. Norwood, I. J Collins, and R. J Norwood.
During the tenure of Rev. Lawrence Booker in 1950, the building that was erected in 1916 was torn down and a new building was built that was used for a sanctuary. Now that building it is used as the Fellowship Hall.
Other pastors who served Macedonia in the early 50’s included: Revs. Adams, Bush, Lewis, Lockett, Stewart, Glibber, Lloyd, and Walker. However, the dates of their administrations are not known.
Macedonia had only one female pastor. In 1958 the Rev. Will Lela Silver from Hillsboro who was appointed to Macedonia and lived in the parsonage during her one-year tenure. During this one year she is credited with installing plumbing and building a porch. Rev. Silver was followed by Rev. N.B. Crockett, who served form 1959-1961. Rev. T. E. Fair of Greenville served from 1961-1964, during his tenure the roof on the parsonage was replaced.
Rev. B.T. Dupree served from 1964 to 1966. The parsonage was remolded during his tenure, also Sister Zerva Salters arranged for acquisition of the building which is now used for the Sanctuary. The building was donated by the Kaufman School Board. Formerly a school, it was moved to the present location in 1965 and used at first for a Recreation Building.
From 1966-1967 Rev. O.S. Spears was pastor of Macedonia AME Church and Ayers Chapel AME Church of Egypt. Macedonia and Ayers Chapel were separated during the administration of Rev. Howard W. Johnson, who served from 1967 to 1978.
During Rev. Johnson’s tenure many changes took place. The parsonage was torn down, roof replaced on the recreation building, and air Conditioning heating system installed. The Women’s Missionary Society donated carpet, a couch, and a chair for the pastor’s Study and the choir purchased an organ and piano. This allowed the church to move into its new sanctuary.
In May 1973, a new cornerstone was laid by Corinthians Lodge No. 51 and Accepted Masons (Prince Hall Affiliation) of Terrell. Trustees listed on the Cornerstone: W. Gilmore, Z Salters, M Scott, Julia Booker, I Jackson, and M. Hornage.
In 1978 Rev. Johnson’s long pastorate at Macedonia ended and Rev. L.C. Hammond was appointed to Macedonia, serving a one-year term.
In October 1979 Rev. Robert L Uzzel was appointed to Macedonia. In August 1980, he established residence in Kaufman, becoming the first resident pastor in many years. In June 5, 1982, the church mortgage was paid in full.and on August 21,1983 the note was burned.
The following Pastors were assigned over the years: 1987-1990 Rev. W.C. Ervin, 1990 Rev. L.C. Hammond, 1990 Rev. C.L. Roberts, 1990-1997 Rev. Ricky Green. The Reverend Alton Paris was appointed Senior Pastor, Macedonia AME Church in 1997 to 2009 during the early years if his administration Macedonia soared and many accomplishments were made for the good of Macedonia.
The members had a mind to build a new Church Building; special fund raising projects were implemented and progress was made however Rev. Paris retired in October 2009, building a new church during his administration did not materialize and the membership began to decline.
In the same year October 2009, Rev. Warren was appointed to Macedonia. During his tenure the membership became a closer Church Family, enjoying Worship Services and Fellowship gatherings, however financial hardships continued.
Rev. Warren was replaced by Rev. Henry Dampier in November 2013, and is currently serving as pastor. Currently Paula Lister Hughes is serving as Church Secretary and Minister of Music. Presently Stewards include Helen Peteet Smith -Chairperson, Brenda Scott Varela, and Loyce Evelyn Nix. Trustees include Bennie J Husk Lister - Chairperson, Inez Marie Davis, Paula Lister Hughes, Norman Lester Scott, and Gil H. Smith. Gladys Faye Booker Church School Superintendent, Clemmie Watson Bible Study Instructor, Bennie J. Husk Lister Finance Ministry Chairperson and Keeper of Information, First Lady Jeannette Dampier Local President of the Thelma Marie Wesley Women’s Missionary Society, Helen Peteet Smith Treasurer, Fannie Beatrice Malone Stewardesses Chairperson.
The spirit is renewed, and the members are in agreement that the time has come to build a new church, and they have a mind to work. Vision and Mission reaffirmed, Building Committee reactivated. Presently Building Committee include Pastor Henry Dampier-Ex-officio, Bennie J Husk Lister, Inez Davis, Paula Lister Hughes, Norman Lester Scott, Gil H Smith, Janice Stewart White, and Clemmie Watson.
It is believed that Rev. Henry Dampier is the one God will allow a new Church Building to be erected on the present site, 1504 East First North Street during his tenure.
